Recently, I wanted to push my limits in regards to 3D printing. I wanted to make something special that represented my country and make it a gift for a special person. I started, then, to learn about lithophanes, the process of turning photos into 3d objects. It gives your pictures more feeling and literally adds a new dimension. For the sake of simplicity, also because it was my first attempt, and finally I was skeptical my 3D printer could make this work, I used an online tool where I imported the picture I wanted. I change some settings to create the border and resolution of the print and then downloaded the final STL file. Used my Cura slicer to generate the G-coded, and voila!

This print showcases “El Avila,” it is the mountain that surrounds the city of Caracas, Venezuela.

In the future, I will make sure the bed is correctly leveled. The print adhered to much to the tape and as I tried to remove it, it broke. Once, I fix this, who knows maybe I will start a business creating customized lithophanes!
